Phased-array radars steer their transmitted and received beams electronically by controlling the phase relationship between signals fed to individual antenna elements in the array, eliminating the mechanical rotation required by conventional dish antenna radar systems. This electronic beam steering allows the radar to shift its observation direction in microseconds rather than the seconds required for a rotating antenna to complete a full revolution, enabling simultaneous tracking of multiple targets and rapid sector switching within a single radar installation.

The antenna array consists of hundreds to thousands of individual radiating elements arranged across a flat or curved panel surface, each connected to a phase shifter that delays or advances the transmitted signal by a controlled amount. When phase shifts across the element array combine to produce a coherent wavefront tilted at a defined angle relative to the panel face, the resulting beam points in the direction perpendicular to that tilted wavefront. Additionally, active electronically scanned arrays place individual transmit-receive module hardware behind each antenna element, distributing transmitter and receiver function across the array rather than concentrating it in a single central transmitter, which improves reliability since element failures cause gradual performance reduction rather than complete system loss.

Operating frequency bands vary by mission requirement, with L-band systems in the 1 to 2 GHz range providing long-range search capability at reduced resolution, S-band systems at 2 to 4 GHz balancing range and resolution for air surveillance, and X-band systems at 8 to 12 GHz delivering high resolution for weapon guidance and short-range precision tracking applications. Furthermore, pulse compression waveforms allow phased-array systems to transmit long pulses for energy efficiency while achieving the range resolution of much shorter pulses through matched filter processing in the receiver chain.

Integration with command and control networks uses standardized data link protocols, with track data output feeding air defense systems, early warning networks, and border surveillance command centers.
