Optical Fiber Spectroscopy
Optical fiber spectroscopy uses optical fiber cables to deliver excitation light to a sample. Collection fibers return the resulting emission, absorption, or scattering signal to a remote spectrometer. Furthermore, this decouples the instrument from the sample location — enabling analysis in hazardous, confined, or inaccessible environments.
Fiber optic probes consist of one or more excitation fibers surrounded by collection fibers at the probe tip. The excitation fiber delivers laser or broadband light to the sample surface. Collection fibers gather reflected, scattered, or emitted photons and return them to the detector. Furthermore, immersion probes contact the sample directly. They suit liquid reaction monitoring, dissolution testing, and process analytical technology applications. Reflectance probes measure diffuse reflectance from solid surfaces. These include pharmaceutical tablets, food products, and geological core samples without contact or preparation.
Raman fiber probes deliver laser excitation at 785nm or 1064nm to the sample. They collect the inelastic Raman scatter signal through the same fiber bundle. Long-fiber configurations extend probe reach to 100 meters or more. As a result, they enable Raman measurement inside reactor vessels and sealed containers from a centrally located spectrometer. Additionally, fluorescence fiber probes deliver UV excitation at 365nm or 405nm. These suit biological fluid detection, forensic evidence illumination, and environmental contamination screening in field conditions.
Near-infrared fiber probes transmit the 900nm to 2,500nm spectral range through low-OH silica fiber. They measure moisture, fat, protein, and active pharmaceutical ingredient content. Moreover, fiber optic multiplexer switches connect multiple probe positions to a single spectrometer. This enables sequential measurement across 8 to 32 sampling points without multiple instruments.
