Optical Detection Systems

Optical detection systems identify, track, and characterize targets using visible light, near-infrared, and thermal infrared wavelengths. They provide surveillance, threat warning, fire control, and scientific measurement capability. Furthermore, they deliver target resolution and discrimination that radar and RF detection alone cannot achieve.

Electro-optical systems use high-resolution CMOS and CCD sensors. Daylight cameras with 10x to 40x optical zoom resolve facial features and vehicle plates beyond 500 meters. Low-light CMOS sensors with back-illuminated architectures deliver usable imagery below 0.001 Lux. This extends detection into twilight and starlight conditions without active illumination. Thermal infrared systems use uncooled LWIR microbolometer detectors at 640×512 or 1280×1024 pixel resolution. These detect heat signatures in complete darkness, fog, smoke, and rain. Thermal sensitivity below 25mK resolves temperature differences at ranges exceeding 1,500 meters. Furthermore, cooled MWIR detectors using InSb focal plane arrays extend detection to ranges above 10 kilometers. These suit airborne ISR and naval surveillance platforms targeting vehicle and aircraft-sized signatures.

Laser warning receivers detect incoming laser rangefinder and designator emissions. They alert vehicle and aircraft crews to active targeting within milliseconds. Spectral coverage spans 0.4 to 1.7 µm across professional military systems. Moreover, passive optical systems on airborne platforms detect missile launch plumes and explosion signatures from standoff distances beyond ground-based sensor networks.
