NDIR methane measuring and gas detection systems identify and quantify CH4 concentration through infrared light absorption at the 3.3 µm molecular absorption band. They project IR light through a sample gas volume. The photodetector measures intensity reduction at this wavelength. The system converts this attenuation to a ppm or %LEL reading. Furthermore, this principle avoids the catalytic poisoning that disables pellistor sensors on exposure to silicone, halogen, and sulfur compounds in gas processing environments.

Dual-wavelength reference channels add a second detector at a non-absorbing wavelength. The ratio between sample and reference signals cancels source aging, temperature drift, and optical fouling. As a result, NDIR methane systems maintain calibration accuracy across 5 to 10 year service intervals. This reduces recalibration visits and replacement costs significantly across large industrial detector networks.

Open-path NDIR detectors project IR beams across 5 to 200 meters between transmitter and receiver units. They detect diffuse methane cloud releases across large open process areas.
