NDIR CO2 Gas Sensor
NDIR CO2 gas sensors detect and measure carbon dioxide concentration using non-dispersive infrared absorption technology. The sensor directs infrared light from a broadband source through a sample gas cell. Carbon dioxide molecules absorb infrared radiation strongly at 4.26 microns wavelength. A narrowband optical filter passes only this specific wavelength to the photodetector. As a result, the detector measures the reduction in transmitted light intensity. The sensor then calculates CO2 concentration from this absorption using the Beer-Lambert law. Additionally, a reference detector channel at a non-absorbing wavelength compensates for source intensity drift over time. Consequently, this dual-beam design maintains measurement accuracy without frequent recalibration.
Measurement range on standard NDIR CO2 sensors covers 0 to 2000 ppm for indoor air quality applications. Industrial variants extend to 0 to 100% volume CO2 for high-concentration process streams. Response time runs between 30 and 60 seconds for 90% of full reading. Furthermore, sensor lifespan extends between 5 and 15 years without reagent replacement. Output interfaces include analog 0-5V, 4-20mA current loop, and digital I2C, UART, or Modbus RTU protocols. These connect directly to building management systems, HVAC controllers, and industrial process platforms.
Operating temperature range covers 0°C to 50°C on standard commercial variants. Industrial-grade models extend to -20°C to +60°C. Moreover, automatic baseline correction algorithms periodically reset the zero point during low-CO2 periods.
