MRZ Scanner
An MRZ scanner reads and decodes the machine-readable zone printed at the bottom of passports, visas, and national identity cards, converting the standardized OCR-B text lines into structured digital data without manual keyboard entry. The machine-readable zone format follows ICAO 9303 specifications, encoding the document holder’s name, document number, nationality, date of birth, sex, expiry date, and document type within a fixed-width character format that any compliant MRZ scanner can interpret regardless of the issuing country.
Image capture occurs through either a slot-style reader requiring the document to slide through a scanning mechanism, or a camera-based capture unit photographing the document from above without physical contact, with the latter approach better suited to delicate or worn documents that repeated swiping could damage. Optical character recognition processing trained specifically on the OCR-B font extracts each character within the MRZ lines, converting the encoded text into usable data fields within under one second on most professional scanner models. Embedded checksum digits within the MRZ format allow the scanner to validate decoded data automatically, calculating expected check values and comparing them against the document’s encoded checksums to flag potential read errors or tampering attempts.
Connectivity options span USB, serial RS-232, and Bluetooth interfaces, with software development kits supporting integration into airline check-in systems, hotel registration platforms, banking compliance workflows, and government identity verification terminals. Combined optical and MRZ scanning on advanced models adds UV and infrared document authentication alongside basic MRZ data extraction.
In Pakistan, MRZ scanners operate at airport check-in and immigration counters, hotel guest registration desks, bank KYC compliance stations, and government office identity verification points where rapid, accurate extraction of passport and ID card data supports operational efficiency and recordkeeping accuracy.
Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies MRZ scanners for aviation, hospitality, banking, and government identity verification applications across Pakistan.
