Laser-based air defense systems use directed high-energy beams to detect, track, and physically destroy airborne threats — including drones, rockets, mortars, cruise missiles, and hypersonic glide vehicles — through concentrated thermal energy delivered at the speed of light. These systems provide air defense commands with an engagement option that combines unlimited magazine depth, near-zero cost per shot, and multi-target engagement capability against threats that saturate conventional interceptor missile inventories.

The engagement architecture integrates three subsystems. The sensor layer combines 3D surveillance radar for long-range detection and track initiation, infrared search and track (IRST) for passive heat signature detection, and electro-optical cameras for target classification and engagement confirmation. The fire control layer fuses sensor data into a continuous target track, calculates intercept geometry, and maintains beam pointing accuracy within microradians on maneuvering targets using fast-steering mirrors operating at bandwidths above 1kHz.

Laser output power determines the threat envelope. Systems at 10kW to 50kW defeat commercial drones and small UAVs within 2 kilometers. Power levels of 100kW to 300kW extend engagement range and address rocket, artillery, and mortar (RAM) threats — achieving dwell times sufficient to rupture motor casings or detonate warheads at ranges exceeding 5 kilometers.
