Ladder Splint
A ladder splint is a flexible, moldable immobilization device constructed from two parallel metal wire rails connected by transverse wire rungs, forming a ladder-like frame that can be bent and shaped to conform to the contour of an injured limb before being secured in place with bandaging or straps. The wire frame holds its shape after bending, maintaining the custom contour applied by the first responder throughout patient transport without springing back to its original flat configuration. This moldability distinguishes ladder splints from rigid pre-formed splints that cannot conform to individual limb anatomy or non-standard fracture positions.
The wire frame is padded with foam or cotton batting material along its length to cushion the injured limb and prevent pressure sores at wire contact points during extended immobilization periods. Standard ladder splint dimensions range from 60cm to 120cm in length and 7cm to 10cm in width, covering upper and lower limb applications from wrist and forearm injuries to full lower leg and ankle fracture immobilization. Longer 120cm versions accommodate femur and full leg immobilization when paired with traction devices.
Application requires bending the splint to the desired limb contour before or after positioning against the injury, then securing with triangular bandages, rolled gauze, or cravat ties at multiple points along the splint length. Pre-bending the splint to the uninjured limb as a mirror template ensures correct contour without manipulating the injured side.
Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies ladder splints for military medical units, ambulance services, rescue teams, and disaster response organizations requiring versatile field fracture immobilization equipment across Pakistan.
