Jamming and spoofing are two distinct forms of electronic attack targeting radio frequency dependent systems including GPS navigation, cellular communications, satellite links, and wireless data networks. Both techniques disrupt the normal operation of target systems but achieve this through different mechanisms with different operational effects and detection characteristics.

Jamming works by transmitting high-power noise or interference signals across the target frequency band. This raises the local noise floor above the legitimate signal level, preventing the target receiver from decoding the intended transmission. GPS jammers flood the L1 and L2 satellite frequency bands with broadband noise, causing receivers to lose position fix and display a signal-lost error. Cellular jammers overpower base station signals across 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G frequency bands, dropping connected devices off the network. Jamming is detectable because target receivers immediately register signal loss. Operators carrying RF detection equipment identify jamming events by the abnormal power levels appearing across affected frequency bands.

Spoofing takes a more sophisticated approach. Instead of overpowering legitimate signals, spoofers transmit counterfeit signals that mimic the structure and content of genuine transmissions. GPS spoofing broadcasts false satellite signals that target receivers process as authentic, producing incorrect position, velocity, or time outputs without triggering signal-loss alarms. This makes spoofing harder to detect than jamming and potentially more dangerous in navigation-critical applications.

Counter-jamming and anti-spoofing measures include directional antennas that reject off-axis interference, multi-constellation GNSS receivers that cross-check position across GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo simultaneously, signal authentication protocols, and inertial navigation system integration for position cross-referencing during GNSS outages.
