Industrial Ultrasonic Transducers
Industrial ultrasonic transducers convert electrical energy into high-frequency mechanical sound waves and receive the returning echoes — forming the active sensing element in ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT), flow measurement, level detection, and thickness gauging systems. These devices make contact with or transmit through a test material and generate acoustic data that reveals internal defects, wall thickness, and material properties without cutting, drilling, or destroying the component under inspection.
Transducer types cover a wide range of inspection geometries and material combinations. Single element contact transducers transmit and receive through a piezoelectric crystal bonded to the test surface using acoustic couplant gel. Operating frequencies range from 0.5 MHz for coarse-grain or thick materials up to 25 MHz for fine-defect detection in electronic components and thin-wall structures. Dual element transducers use separate transmit and receive crystals in a single housing — eliminating near-surface dead zones and making them the preferred choice for corrosion monitoring on pipelines and pressure vessels. Furthermore, phased array transducers contain multiple elements firing in programmable sequences, steering and focusing the beam without moving the probe — covering large weld volumes in a single scan pass.
Angle beam shear wave transducers direct sound energy into a material at specific refraction angles — typically 45°, 60°, or 70° — for detecting planar defects such as fatigue cracks and lack-of-fusion flaws in welds. Immersion transducers operate in water tanks for uniform coupling on complex geometries. Additionally, Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMATs) generate ultrasonic waves without physical contact or couplant — using electromagnetic induction for high-temperature inspection and coated surface assessment.
