ID verification is the process of confirming that an identity document presented by an individual is genuine, unaltered, and belongs to the person presenting it. Document authentication examines physical and digital security features embedded in the credential. UV fluorescence patterns, infrared ink responses, microprinting, holographic overlaminates, laser-perforated personalization, and machine-readable zone integrity all serve as verification checkpoints that distinguish genuine government-issued documents from counterfeits and alterations. Electronic verification on ICAO-compliant e-passports and smart ID cards reads the RFID chip’s digitally signed data and validates the cryptographic signature against the issuing authority’s certificate, confirming that chip data has not been tampered with after issuance.

Identity confirmation matches the document holder against the credential through facial comparison, fingerprint matching, or both. Liveness detection algorithms reject photograph and screen-based spoofing attempts during facial capture.
