ID and passport readers are electronic document scanning devices that extract, decode, and verify identity data from machine-readable travel documents, national identity cards, driving licenses, and other government-issued credentials through optical character recognition, barcode scanning, magnetic stripe reading, and NFC chip communication. These readers automate the data capture process that manual document inspection requires, reducing processing time per individual from minutes to seconds while simultaneously applying authentication checks that human inspection cannot reliably perform at speed and volume.

The optical scanning module captures the document’s data page under white, ultraviolet, and infrared illumination to reveal security features including UV-fluorescent inks, infrared-transparent and infrared-absorbing ink patterns, watermarks, and security thread characteristics invisible under standard visible light.
