High-Temperature Speed Sensors
High-Temperature Speed Sensors are rotational and linear velocity measurement devices engineered to operate reliably in thermal environments that exceed the limits of standard speed sensing technology, typically covering continuous operating temperatures from 150°C to 300°C and short-term peak exposures up to 500°C or higher depending on sensor construction and materials. These sensors serve industrial processes, automotive testing, turbine monitoring, aerospace applications, and military systems where accurate speed measurement must be maintained in close proximity to heat sources including furnaces, engine exhausts, gas turbines, and industrial drives.
The sensing technology varies by application temperature range and output requirement. Variable reluctance (VR) sensors use a passive coil wound around a permanent magnet core that generates a sinusoidal output voltage as ferromagnetic gear teeth on a rotating target wheel pass the sensor tip. VR sensors contain no active electronics and tolerate continuous operating temperatures above 200°C without signal degradation.
Magnetoresistive (MR) and giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensors offer improved sensitivity at low rotational speeds compared to VR types, detecting gear tooth passage at speeds approaching zero RPM. High-temperature magnetoresistive sensor packages use ceramic substrate construction and high-temperature wire insulation rated to 260°C continuous for engine and transmission applications.
Sensor housings use stainless steel or Inconel alloy bodies with ceramic-filled or PTFE-insulated cable connections rated for the full operating temperature range. Target gap tolerances between sensor tip and gear tooth face range from 0.3mm to 2.5mm depending on sensor type and output signal strength requirements.
