High-Frequency Ultrasonic Transducer
A High-Frequency Ultrasonic Transducer is a piezoelectric device that converts electrical drive signals into high-frequency mechanical vibrations — typically above 5MHz and extending to 100MHz or higher — and receives reflected acoustic energy back as electrical signals for non-destructive testing, medical imaging, industrial measurement, and research applications requiring fine spatial resolution at shallow inspection depths.
The transducer core is a piezoelectric element — most commonly lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic, lithium niobate, or PVDF polymer film — cut to a thickness that determines the resonant frequency. Thinner elements produce higher frequencies with shorter acoustic wavelengths. A 10MHz transducer generates wavelengths of approximately 0.15mm in steel, resolving defects and features down to half that dimension. A 50MHz transducer resolves features below 0.03mm in soft tissue or thin material layers.
Backing material bonded to the rear face of the piezoelectric element damps ringing after each transmitted pulse, shortening pulse duration and improving axial resolution in pulse-echo measurement. Matching layers on the front face reduce acoustic impedance mismatch between the piezoelectric element and the test medium, maximizing energy transfer into water, tissue, or solid material coupling surfaces.
Focused transducer designs use curved piezoelectric elements or acoustic lenses to concentrate the ultrasonic beam at a defined focal depth, increasing lateral resolution and sensitivity within the focal zone. Focal depths on high-frequency focused transducers range from 3mm to 50mm depending on element curvature and frequency.
