Hazardous materials recognition covers the identification of dangerous substances — chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and industrial — at the point of encounter, before emergency response actions are initiated. Accurate recognition determines every subsequent decision: evacuation radius, personal protective equipment (PPE) selection, decontamination protocol, and whether specialist teams need to be called forward.
Field recognition relies on a combination of placard and label reading, physical property observation, and instrumentation. UN hazard placards, GHS pictograms, NFPA 704 diamond markings, and transport emergency (TREM) cards provide initial classification data at standoff distance.
