Hard Kill

Hard kill refers to the physical destruction or permanent mechanical disablement of a hostile unmanned aerial system through kinetic or directed energy means. Unlike soft kill methods — jamming, spoofing, or RF takeover — hard kill measures make direct contact with or concentrate destructive energy onto the target airframe, rendering it flight-incapable and eliminating the threat entirely. These systems function as the final layer in a layered C-UAS defense architecture, activated when non-kinetic options are ineffective or when the threat timeline is too compressed for electronic intervention.

Kinetic hard kill methods include high-velocity projectile systems firing 7.62mm to 30mm calibre rounds with airburst or proximity-fused munitions engaging targets at ranges out to 3,000 meters, net-launching systems that mechanically entangle drone rotors or fixed wings, and interceptor drones that physically ram or deploy nets against target UAVs. Directed energy hard kill systems include high-energy lasers that generate thermal stress sufficient to melt structural components, motor housings, or battery packs, and high-power microwave (HPM) emitters that destroy onboard electronics across wide engagement angles — effective against drone swarms where single-target kinetic engagement is impractical.

Hard kill engagement requires centimeter-level tracking accuracy from fire-control radars or electro-optical systems to achieve reliable intercept. Systems such as remote weapon stations (RWS) mounting 30mm cannons with proximity-fused airburst rounds combine active radar tracking, thermal imaging, and automated fire control into a single platform capable of defeating multiple drone targets in sequence without manual targeting input between engagements.
