Grenade Launcher

A grenade launcher is a weapons system designed to project explosive, smoke, illumination, or less-lethal grenades to distances beyond effective hand-throw range, extending the engagement capability of infantry and security personnel against personnel, light vehicles, and fortified positions. Grenade launchers are produced in standalone configurations as dedicated single or multi-shot weapons and as underbarrel attachments that mount beneath the barrel of a host rifle, allowing the operator to switch between direct fire and grenade projection without carrying a separate weapon system.

The most widely fielded underbarrel grenade launcher format accepts 40mm grenades and attaches to Picatinny or proprietary barrel mounting systems on rifles including M16, M4, AK-pattern, and G3 variants in service with Pakistan’s military and law enforcement organizations. Single-shot 40mm launchers such as the M203 and GP-25 pattern operate on a sliding barrel or break-open mechanism, while standalone multi-shot revolving cylinder launchers including the Milkor MGL platform hold six rounds for sustained projection capability. Effective range for 40mm high-explosive grenades reaches 350 to 400 meters with point detonation fuzes, while area denial munitions achieve effective fragmentation coverage at ranges up to 400 meters.

Less-lethal 40mm ammunition variants including baton rounds, CS gas projectiles, and smoke grenades are standard equipment for law enforcement crowd control and riot management operations. Illumination rounds provide battlefield lighting at deployment altitudes of 200 to 400 meters with burn durations of 40 seconds or more.
