A Footprint Light Source is a specialized forensic illumination device used to enhance the visibility and contrast of latent footwear impressions, bare foot marks, and trace evidence deposited on floors, ground surfaces, and other substrates during crime scene examination. By directing light at controlled angles, wavelengths, and intensities onto a surface, the light source exploits the physical and optical properties of impression evidence to make marks visible that are undetectable under standard white light conditions.

Oblique or grazing light illumination is the primary technique employed, positioning the light source at a low angle of 5 to 15 degrees relative to the surface plane. At this angle, even shallow impressions in dust, soft soil, carpet, or compressible flooring materials cast visible shadows that reveal the impression geometry against the surface texture. The light source housing on forensic oblique illuminators includes an adjustable mounting bracket and a narrowed beam aperture to concentrate output into a defined illumination line without scatter flooding adjacent areas.

Alternate light sources (ALS) operating at specific visible and ultraviolet wavelengths enhance footwear marks deposited in fluorescent substances — including certain lubricants, biological fluids, cleaning products, and fluorescent security powders — by exciting fluorescence at the impression location. ALS wavelengths used for footwear evidence include 450nm to 490nm blue for general fluorescence, 530nm green for blood enhancement reagent fluorescence, and 365nm UV for security marking compound detection. Output power on forensic ALS units typically reaches 300mW to 1,000mW at the selected wavelength band.

Infrared (IR) illumination at 850nm to 940nm wavelengths penetrates certain surface coatings and reveals impressions in substrates where visible light reflection masks the mark geometry, captured through an IR-sensitive camera rather than direct visual observation.

In Pakistan, footprint light sources are used by forensic crime scene examination teams, police investigation units, customs and border forensics departments, and university forensic science programs conducting evidence analysis and training.

Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies footprint light sources across oblique, ALS, and infrared configurations for forensic investigation and crime scene examination procurement across Pakistan.
