FOAM PROPORTIONER
A Foam Proportioner is a hydraulic or mechanical device installed within a fire suppression system’s water supply line to inject foam concentrate into the flowing water stream at a precise ratio, producing a foam solution that is subsequently discharged through nozzles or monitors to suppress and smother flammable liquid, hydrocarbon, and Class A fire scenarios. Accurate proportioning is critical to foam system performance — under-concentration reduces suppression effectiveness, while over-concentration wastes concentrate and may produce foam with incorrect expansion and drainage characteristics.
The proportioning mechanism operates on one of several hydraulic principles depending on the system configuration and flow rate requirements. Venturi-based inline inductors use the pressure differential created by flowing water through a constricted throat to draw foam concentrate from a separate storage container into the water stream at a fixed induction ratio — typically 1 percent, 3 percent, or 6 percent by volume. Bladder tank proportioners use water pressure entering a steel tank to compress a flexible bladder containing foam concentrate, forcing concentrate into the water line at a rate determined by the differential pressure across the bladder and a metering orifice. Around-the-pump proportioners recirculate a controlled portion of pump discharge back through a concentrate metering valve and into the pump suction line, achieving proportioning ratios that remain consistent across varying flow rates.
Variable flow proportioners — including balanced pressure and electronic metering systems — adjust concentrate injection rate automatically in response to changes in water flow, maintaining target proportioning ratios across the full operational flow range from minimum to maximum system demand. Proportioning accuracy on certified units meets the ±0.1 percent tolerance specified in EN 13565-1, NFPA 11, and FM Global DS 4-1 foam system standards.
Materials in contact with foam concentrate are constructed from stainless steel, brass, or concentrate-compatible polymer to prevent degradation from the surfactant and solvent components present in AFFF, FFFP, protein, and fluoroprotein foam concentrates.
In Pakistan, foam proportioners are installed in airport rescue and firefighting (ARFF) systems, oil and gas facility fire suppression networks, petrochemical plant foam systems, and industrial fire protection installations requiring certified foam delivery infrastructure.
Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies foam proportioners across inductor, bladder tank, and variable flow configurations for industrial fire suppression and ARFF procurement across Pakistan.
