Fluorescent Magnetic Powders
Fluorescent Magnetic Powders are dry ferromagnetic particle formulations coated with fluorescent dye compounds, used in dry-method magnetic particle inspection (MPI) to reveal surface-breaking and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic components under ultraviolet-A (UV-A) illumination at 365nm. The fluorescent coating emits visible yellow-green light at approximately 520nm to 550nm wavelength when excited by UV-A, creating high-brightness indication buildups at crack locations that stand out sharply against the darkened component surface under UV-A inspection lighting, improving detection sensitivity over standard visible-color dry powder methods.
Particle composition is carbonyl iron, iron oxide, or a blended iron alloy powder processed to a controlled size distribution — typically 40 to 200 micrometers — larger than wet suspension particles to ensure adequate powder mobility under air current application methods including insufflation bulbs, squeeze bottles, and aerosol spray dispensers. The larger particle size provides sufficient mass for gravity settlement and surface contact on horizontal and inclined component surfaces while retaining the magnetic susceptibility required to migrate toward flux leakage fields at discontinuity edges under applied magnetization.
Fluorescent powder brightness is specified by fluorescent particle brightness (FPB) values measured under standardized 1,000 microwatt per square centimeter UV-A illumination, with inspection-grade formulations achieving FPB readings above 1,500 microamperes. Color options beyond yellow-green include red-orange fluorescent variants at 590nm emission for inspection of components where yellow-green background fluorescence from coatings or surface contamination reduces yellow-green particle contrast.
Application is suited to large structural weldments, field inspection of in-service components, elevated surface temperature parts where wet carrier fluids would evaporate, and components that cannot be immersed in a wet bath system due to size, geometry, or operational constraints.
