Dueling Tree

A Dueling Tree is a reactive steel target system built for competitive two-shooter marksmanship drills, consisting of a vertical center post with an equal number of pivoting steel paddle targets mounted on hinged arms extending from both sides of the column. The competitive format requires each shooter to engage the paddles on their side, with each successful hit swinging the struck paddle across the center post to the opponent’s side — the goal being to move all paddles to the opposing shooter’s side before they can do the same, producing a dynamic, fast-paced engagement format that develops speed, accuracy, and target transition skills simultaneously.

The paddle targets are manufactured from AR500 hardened steel plate in thicknesses between 3/16 inch and 3/8 inch, sized to accommodate pistol calibers from 9mm through .45 ACP at manufacturer-specified minimum engagement distances. Standard configurations feature six paddles — three per side — each measuring 6 inches in diameter or width, pivot-mounted on steel swing arms that carry the paddle across the center post axis upon impact. The pivot mechanism uses a steel pin and bushing arrangement requiring no springs or mechanical components beyond the arm weight and impact momentum to transfer paddles between sides.

The vertical support post is fabricated from 2-inch square or round structural steel tube, with a ground stake for soil installation or a weighted base plate for concrete and hard surface deployment. Post height positions paddles between 0.5 and 1.4 meters above ground, covering the standard pistol engagement height range for standing and position shooting.

All steel components receive powder coat or zinc-based primer treatment to control surface oxidation, with paddle faces designed for high-impact contact paint touch-up after extended range use. Total system weight typically falls between 15kg and 30kg depending on paddle count and post length.
