Drones First Responders (DFR) are unmanned aerial vehicle systems deployed ahead of or alongside human emergency response personnel to provide immediate aerial reconnaissance, situational awareness, and operational support at incident scenes including fires, road accidents, criminal incidents, search and rescue operations, and natural disasters. By launching within seconds of an incident report, DFR systems deliver live aerial video to dispatchers and responding units before ground personnel arrive on scene, improving initial response decisions and resource allocation.

The DFR platform is typically a multirotor UAV with a flight endurance of 20 to 45 minutes per battery charge, capable of reaching speeds between 50 and 80 kilometers per hour to cover response distances of 3 to 8 kilometers from its launch point within minutes of dispatch. The payload suite includes a stabilized gimbal camera combining a high-resolution daylight sensor — typically 4K at 30fps — with a thermal infrared imager for night operations, fire detection, and victim location in smoke-obscured or low-visibility environments. A spotlight and loudspeaker on certain DFR configurations allow operators to illuminate incident scenes and communicate with individuals on the ground during active response.
