A directed-energy weapon is a military system employing concentrated electromagnetic radiation, acoustic energy, or particle beams to disable or destroy targets through direct energy transfer without kinetic projectiles. The directed-energy approach provides speed-of-light engagement enabling interception of supersonic or hypersonic threats impossible for conventional kinetic systems.

Directed-energy weapon types include high-energy lasers (HEL) employing focused photon beams inducing thermal damage through energy concentration, high-power microwave (HPM) systems generating electromagnetic pulses disrupting electronic systems, and particle beam systems accelerating charged particles inducing ionisation damage. Laser systems provide precision targeting enabling selective engagement minimising collateral damage from kinetic debris. Microwave systems enable rapid multi-target engagement through electronic beam steering.

Tactical applications include counter-air defence engaging aircraft and unmanned systems, anti-ship defence protecting naval platforms, counter-electronic warfare disabling hostile communication or radar systems, and close-in defence against incoming missiles. Strategic applications address ballistic missile defence during boost or midcourse phases.

Engagement effectiveness depends on target characteristics, dwell time, and atmospheric conditions. Aircraft require sustained beam focus (typically 5–15 seconds) inducing airframe or component thermal failure. Unmanned systems with lower thermal mass require shorter engagement duration enabling sequential target engagement. Missile seeker degradation through optical damage requires only microseconds.

Challenges include atmospheric effects degrading beam quality, power generation and thermal dissipation requirements, and international treaty restrictions on space-based deployment.
