A defense laser is a directed-energy weapon system employing concentrated high-power photon beams to disable or destroy targets through thermal damage, optical damage, or electronic component degradation. The laser approach provides speed-of-light engagement enabling interception of supersonic or hypersonic threats impossible for conventional kinetic systems.

Premium defense laser systems employ solid-state or fibre laser technology delivering 5–100 kilowatt continuous output at wavelengths optimised for atmospheric transmission (typically 1.06 micrometres for Nd:YAG or 1.55 micrometres for fibre lasers).
