A Compact ID and MRZ Reader is a handheld or desktop document scanning device designed to capture and decode data from identity documents including national identity cards, passports, visas, and travel documents containing a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ). The MRZ — the two or three-line printed strip at the bottom of a document’s data page — encodes the holder’s personal information, document number, nationality, and expiry date in a standardized OCR-B font format compliant with ICAO Document 9303 specifications.

The reader uses a built-in optical sensor or camera module to capture the MRZ field, with onboard OCR processing decoding the alphanumeric string within milliseconds and populating structured data fields — name, date of birth, document number, nationality, and expiry — into the connected software interface. Check digit verification is performed automatically against the encoded MRZ values to flag data integrity errors or document anomalies.

Beyond MRZ decoding, advanced compact readers incorporate white light and infrared illumination to capture the document’s visual inspection zone (VIZ) and detect security features including UV-reactive inks, holographic overlays, and micro-printed elements. Biometric chip reading via integrated NFC or RFID modules allows extraction of facial image data and fingerprint templates stored on e-passport chips, cross-referencing digital and printed data for consistency checks.

The device connects to host systems via USB or Bluetooth, with SDK support for integration into custom enrollment, border control, and access management software platforms.

Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies compact ID and MRZ readers for security, hospitality, banking, and border management applications nationwide.
