Centrifugal Pump Sealing refers to the mechanical and material systems used to prevent fluid leakage at the rotating shaft interface of a centrifugal pump. As the shaft passes through the pump casing to connect with the impeller, it creates a potential leakage point where process fluid — water, chemicals, slurry, or hydrocarbons — can escape under operating pressure. Effective sealing at this junction is critical for maintaining pump efficiency, protecting surrounding equipment, and ensuring operator safety.

The two primary sealing methods are mechanical seals and gland packing. Mechanical seals consist of a rotating face mounted on the shaft and a stationary face fixed to the casing, held in contact by spring tension and fluid pressure. They are available in single, double, and tandem configurations depending on the fluid type, pressure rating, and environmental containment requirements. Gland packing uses compressed rings of braided material — typically PTFE, graphite, or aramid fiber — wrapped around the shaft within a stuffing box, requiring periodic adjustment and a controlled leak rate for lubrication.

Seal materials are selected based on fluid compatibility, with options including carbon, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, and various elastomers for O-ring components. Operating temperature and pressure ratings vary by configuration, with high-performance mechanical seals handling pressures above 20 bar and temperatures exceeding 200°C.
