Bomb Protection Suit BPS
A bomb protection suit (BPS) is a comprehensive personal protective equipment ensemble designed to shield explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) personnel from blast fragmentation, shrapnel, and thermal radiation during suspected explosive device handling and neutralisation operations. The BPS approach enables EOD technicians to work at close proximity to explosive threats while maintaining protective redundancy if containment or mitigation fails.
Premium BPS systems employ aramid fibre outer shells — Kevlar or Nomex — rated to stop fragmentation travelling at ballistic velocities up to 1,400 metres per second. Multiple aramid layers bonded with resin matrices dissipate kinetic energy through fibre stretching and friction, reducing stress concentration and preventing penetration. Suit construction includes substantial padding over joints and vital organs — shoulders, chest, abdomen, spine — concentrating protective material where blast injury risk is greatest.
The integrated helmet uses composite construction — fibreglass or carbon fibre shell with impact-absorbing foam liner — rated for direct fragmentation impact and blast overpressure protection. The ballistic visor employs multi-laminate polycarbonate or ballistic glass achieving B4 to B7 protection level, maintaining optical clarity while deflecting fragmentation at oblique angles. Panoramic visor design maximises operator field of view critical for detailed explosive device manipulation.
Total suit weight including helmet typically ranges 20–28kg, creating physiological stress during extended wear — suit ventilation systems employ moisture-wicking liners and mesh panels maintaining core temperature within safe ranges despite external environmental heat and restricted air circulation.
