Ballistic protection encompasses materials, systems, and installation methods designed to absorb and deflect projectile and fragmentation energy, preventing penetration into protected spaces or preventing injuries to shielded personnel. Ballistic protection systems operate across scales from personal body armour plates worn on the torso, to vehicle perimeter armour, to fixed-site hardening of buildings and bunkers — each application requires customised material selection and thickness optimisation balancing protection level against weight, cost, and operational constraints.

Material options span hardened steel plate providing consistent protection across multiple impact cycles, ceramic composite tiles achieving superior weight efficiency at the cost of single-hit degradation, and advanced polymeric materials including ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene offering inherent buoyancy and corrosion resistance suitable for maritime applications. Protection levels are standardised through NIJ (National Institute of Justice) ratings for law enforcement and civilian applications, and STANAG (Standardisation Agreement) specifications for military platforms.

Effective ballistic protection requires consideration of threat ammunition — handgun calibres produce lower penetration velocity compared to rifle rounds, necessitating different armour thickness and material composition.
