Ballistic blocks are modular protective elements constructed from hardened steel, ceramic composite, or layered materials engineered to absorb and deflect rifle projectiles and fragmentation. Unlike monolithic armour plates requiring full-vehicle integration, ballistic blocks are discrete units that can be stacked, arranged, or repositioned to create custom protection configurations around personnel, equipment, or fixed installations — enabling rapid deployment of defensive barriers without specialised installation infrastructure.
Block construction typically employs AR500 hardened steel ranging from 6mm to 12mm thickness, or ceramic composite materials combining aluminium oxide or boron carbide tiles bonded to polymeric backing matrices. Steel blocks provide consistent performance across multiple impact cycles with minimal maintenance, while ceramic composites offer superior weight-to-protection ratio at the cost of single-hit serviceability — ceramic tiles degrade or shatter upon impact and require replacement. Block dimensions commonly range from 300mm × 300mm to 600mm × 600mm face areas, with weight between 15kg and 60kg per block depending on material and thickness.
Stacking systems use interlocking dovetail or mortise-and-tenon geometry allowing blocks to be assembled into walls, fortified positions, or protective structures without fasteners or welding. Modular arrangement permits rapid reconfiguration as threat assessment or operational requirements change — blocks can be repositioned within hours to reinforce vulnerable apertures or reorient protection vector.
Applications include temporary fortified checkpoints, vehicle checkpoint barriers, fixed-site perimeter hardening, and armoured shelter construction for command posts or casualty treatment areas.
