Backpack Steel Cutting Torch

A backpack steel cutting torch is a portable oxy-fuel or plasma-based thermal cutting system designed for rapid severance of steel structures, barriers, or equipment during tactical breaching, infrastructure emergency response, or field maintenance operations. The backpack configuration allows a single operator to carry fuel supply, cutting torch, and control systems without vehicle support, enabling independent breaching capability for foot-mobile teams across remote or confined spaces where vehicular access is restricted.

Oxy-acetylene configurations employ a portable acetylene tank (typically 5–10 litre capacity) paired with an oxygen cylinder (10–20 litre capacity) mounted in a backpack harness, with flexible hose runs to a handheld cutting torch head. Preheat flames heat steel to approximately 1,200°C, followed by a high-pressure oxygen jet that oxidises and blows away molten metal at the cut interface. Cutting speed on steel ranges from 200mm to 400mm per minute depending on thickness — 25mm steel plate typically requires 2–4 minutes for complete severance.

Plasma cutting variants use electrical power from onboard lithium battery packs to generate a high-temperature ionised gas column, offering faster cutting speed (600–1,000mm/min on thin sheet) and reduced heat distortion compared to oxy-fuel, but with greater electrical power draw limiting battery endurance to 1–2 hours continuous operation.

Safety features include backflow prevention valves preventing tank pressurisation reversal, flame arrestors protecting hose integrity, and insulated handles limiting operator contact burn hazard. Cutting torch nozzles are interchangeable, allowing rapid adaptation to different steel thicknesses without equipment reconfiguration.
