SAM ThoraSite
The SAM ThoraSite assists rapid lateral thoracostomies with precise guidance. Measuring 5.6 × 2.7 × 0.04 in (141 × 69 × 1 mm) and weighing just 0.18 oz (5.1 g), it is made from radiolucent, weather-resistant plastic. The device bends slightly to fit patient anatomy while maintaining the alignment window’s integrity. Its bilateral design supports use on either the left or right chest.
The ThoraSite includes a Safety Zone Window highlighted to guide placement over the 3rd–5th intercostal space. An Axilla Hook fits into the patient’s armpit to align the anterior axillary line (AAL) with the mid-axillary line (MAL). Additionally, an alignment arrow rests on the iliac crest for perpendicular orientation. A perforated quick-release tab allows fast removal after positioning, reducing interference during the procedure.
