laceration closure strips
-
Function & Purpose: These are adhesive strips designed to approximate the edges of a clean, superficial laceration or incision to aid healing without the punctures of sutures.
-
Indications: Suitable for small wounds with edges that can be easily brought together, and for areas of low tension (not heavily stretched or mobile skin).
-
Material & Features: Often made of porous medical tape with reinforced filament backing, hypo‑allergenic adhesive, and designed to stay secure even when some moisture is present.
-
Advantages Over Sutures: They reduce the need for needle‑punctures, may lead to less scar formation, are quick to apply, and are more comfortable for minor wounds.
-
Limitations & Contraindications: Not suitable for deep, heavily bleeding, high‑tension or infected wounds. If the wound cannot be easily approximated, sutures or staples may be necessary.
-
Application Tips: Clean and dry the surrounding skin, align wound edges gently, apply strips perpendicular (or as recommended) across the wound at regular intervals, and monitor for signs of infection.
