• Detector type: NaI(Tl) scintillator vs HPGe (high‐purity germanium) vs CeBr3 etc. HPGe gives highest resolution.

  • Energy resolution: e.g., FWHM at certain peaks (e.g., 662 keV for Cs‑137) to assess clarity of peaks.

  • Channels / Multi‑Channel Analyzer (MCA): Number of channels (1024, 2048, etc) and electronics for acquisition.

  • Software/Analysis: Nuclide identification, spectrum library, background subtraction, reports.

  • Calibration & Efficiency: Ability to calibrate for energy and efficiency, traceability, counts per second, minimum detectable activity.

  • Form factor & use case: Is it lab‑based, field portable, handheld, fixed install. For example an “integrated gamma spectrometer” with USB interface is small form.

  • Application specific: e.g., for borehole logging you need rugged, downhole rated tools measuring API calibrated gamma ray.
