Listening Stick
A Listening Stick is a long-handled acoustic surveillance device that allows the operator to detect and capture sound from a distance by extending a directional microphone element on a telescoping or fixed pole, positioning the pickup point closer to the target source without requiring the operator to approach directly. Security personnel, technical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM) teams, and audio investigators use listening sticks when the sound source sits behind a barrier, above reach, or in a location where direct microphone placement would compromise operator safety or covert positioning. Therefore, the extended reach capability of a listening stick solves access problems that handheld microphones cannot address.
The device consists of a rigid or telescoping pole โ typically constructed from carbon fiber, fiberglass, or aluminum alloy โ with a microphone capsule mounted at the working end. Pole lengths range from 1 meter on compact models to 6 meters or more on extended telescoping configurations. Furthermore, the lightweight construction keeps the assembled tool manageable for single-operator handling even at maximum extension length.
Microphone types vary by application requirement. Contact microphones or accelerometer-based pickups mount directly against a surface, detecting structure-borne vibrations transmitted through walls, pipes, or ductwork. Consequently, this configuration suits detecting activity within an adjacent room or sealed enclosure without requiring direct line-of-sight or air gap access. Directional shotgun microphones mounted on the pole tip capture airborne sound from a defined narrow pickup angle at the target location.
A cable or wireless link transmits the captured audio signal back to the operator’s receiver, headphones, or recording device. Additionally, signal amplification and filtering circuitry within the handle assembly boost weak signals while reducing handling noise and wind interference picked up along the pole length.
In Pakistan, listening sticks serve technical surveillance countermeasures teams, security investigation units, and audio forensic specialists conducting building inspections and covert monitoring tasks. Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies Listening Sticks for TSCM, security, and investigative procurement across Pakistan.
